Our Reading Journey with Tay-Tay & T-Ray

Welcome!

I’m a mom of twins, Tay-Tay and T-Ray, and also a mom of four adult children. I used to work with children with autism, and when my twins were little, I noticed some early signs. Both of them were diagnosed with Level 3 autism when they were 2 years old. If you met them today, you might be surprised to learn that, because they have grown and changed so much.

Meet Tay-Tay

Tay-Tay is an amazing reader and a very curious learner. He reads everything around him—even big words he’s never seen before—and he loves to sound things out and figure them out on his own.

He’s especially amazed by big numbers and enjoys adding and subtracting them just for fun.

Tay-Tay is very lovable, has a great sense of humor, and brings a lot of joy and laughter into our home.

Right now, we’re focusing on building his reading comprehension—helping him understand and talk about what he reads, not just decode the words.

Meet T-Ray

T-Ray is very hands-on and loves to build, explore, and test how things work. He enjoys putting things together and putting things in order, like colors, numbers, and letters.

He loves puzzles and is eager to learn how to read stories, especially when we read together. T-Ray also loves playing, jumping, climbing on things, and laughing—he brings so much energy and fun to our days.

He’s the twin who currently shows more visible signs of autism, but every puzzle solved, every sound learned, and every new word is a big step forward that we celebrate.

Why I’m Sharing Our Journey

As an older mom of twins with autism, and with experience working with autistic children, I know how confusing and overwhelming the early years can feel. I created this space to document our reading and learning journey and to encourage other families of autistic children. Progress may look different for every child, but growth is always happening.

A Room For Discovery!

There was a time when their room looked like a picture from a catalog—soft colors, perfect decorations, everything in its place. Two tiny cribs, neatly folded blankets, and walls untouched by time or tiny hands. Back then, the room reflected how small they were.

Then time did what time always does.

The babies grew into explorers.

The room slowly became something else entirely—walls filled with creative marks, toys scattered like ideas mid-thought, and a space that no longer fit into anyone’s idea of “perfect.” To some, it might look unrecognizable. To me, it looks alive.

My twins were diagnosed with autism at an early age, and with that diagnosis came a world that often tries to define limits before discovering potential. But I chose a different path. I chose not to silence curiosity, not to confine creativity, and not to value decoration over discovery.

Sometimes, you have to take the decorations down.
Sometimes, you have to let go of what looks good so you can make room for what feels right.

Within reason, I let them play. I let them explore. I let them learn in the ways that make sense to them. Because learning doesn’t always happen at a desk, and genius doesn’t always look tidy.

What I see in this room—beneath the drawings, the mess, the movement—is greatness. I see minds at work. I see imagination forming. I see two brilliant souls growing exactly the way they’re meant to.

This room tells our story better than any decoration ever could.
